Under the Ley para el Control, Uso y Aplicación de Radioisótopos y Radiaciones Ionizantes and its Reglamento, the Ministerio de Energía y Minas (Dirección General de Energía) licenses radiation practices by type: type I at US$500 and 90 days (trámite 1408) and type II at US$200 and 90 days (trámite 1409). A separate licence is required for the Encargado de Protección Radiológica at US$50 and 30 days, and the applicant must also licence its operators and demonstrate the acquisition of a suitable detector. The obligation falls on the practice and its personnel, not on the device: a hospital cannot operate the installation without the licence even where the device carries an inscription.
