Ārstniecības likums (Medical Treatment Law)

Ārstniecības likums, adopted by the Saeima on 12 June 1997, promulgated by the President, in force since 1 October 1997, published in Latvijas Vēstnesis 167/168 of 1 July 1997 and in Saeimas un Ministru Kabineta Ziņotājs 15 of 7 August 1997. Consolidated text as currently in force, in sixteen chapters: general provisions; health-care supervision; medical ethics committees; rights and duties of persons in health care; health-care practitioners and their activity; the medical profession; the dental profession; the nursing and physician-assistant professions; the functional specialist; the midwife, military paramedic and masseur professions; the duties and rights of practitioners in treatment; the pharmacist’s activity in health care; health-care institutions; alcohol, narcotic, psychotropic and toxic substances and gambling in health-care institutions; mental illness; health and working capacity, forensic-medical and forensic-psychiatric examination; termination of the activity of a health-care institution; the health information system; special provisions on the economic activity of health-care institutions; and administrative offences in the provision of health-care services, plus transitional provisions. Article 34(2) is the provision under which the Cabinet issues the medical device and IVD regulations, so this law is the statutory basis Latvian device rules are read against.
